About SMRT1 Health

Human-Centered Community Healthcare

We believe there is a better way to enable communities to access healthcare resources.

We believe technology innovations and human-centered design can combine to address challenges that disproportionately affect people who are marginalized and underserved in our society.

We’re working on new digital technologies that will help address the root causes of health inequities by expanding access to healthcare resources in locations that make sense for individual communities.

Our Story

Our story begins in 2019 when SMRT1 Health CEO, Amy Knox was confronted with the cruel realities faced by those closest to her – the Tulalip Tribes of Washington State.

Amy learned that to cope with an opioid crisis devastating the community, the Tribe was relying on bulky cardboard boxes placed throughout the reservation, which were intended to hold and make available overdose reversal medications like Narcan/Naloxone.

She looked at the boxes and asked, “Isn’t there a better way?”

To answer that question, Amy began recruiting a team of technology innovators, healthcare professionals, and business leaders who shared her passion for helping others in need. Together, they developed an automated dispensing technology solution designed to address healthcare challenges faced by Indigenous and underserved communities.

The SMRT1 Health team has now created the world’s first Community Action Response & Education (CARE) System, combining state-of-the-art technology, human-centered design, and a commitment to community healthcare. The CARE System is now operational in Native American Nations in Washington, North Dakota and California and is slated to be deployed in additional communities across the US.
